Originally opened in 1965, Mountain Creek started as Great Gorge Resort, on what is today known as Bear and South Peaks.  In 1971, Great Gorge merged with neighboring Vernon Valley Resort, becoming Vernon Valley/Great Gorge and connecting our 4 peaks.  Together, Vernon Valley/Great Gorge enjoyed marvelous success for the next three decades.  Considered THE place to see and be seen, you would see celebrities skiing on the trails and the likes of Ann Margaret and Sammy Davis Jr. performing at the neighboring Playboy Club. In 1998 the Canadian company of Intrawest purchased Vernon Valley/Great Gorge and renamed it Mountain Creek. Intrawest is the owner of other notable resorts such as Whistler Blackcomb, Tremblant and Steamboat.

Merging with the Crystal Springs Resort, located next door to Mountain Creek in spring of 2010; today Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs Resort can offer a true four-season recreation and leisure resort.
